The best way to draw an animal drawing is to start from a step by step guide or even take the risk of finding an image and rolling with it. Always recommend to start easy then move up to more realistic challenges once you have your foot on the ground. Drawing is a skill that everyone has and blossoms with practise. Believe it or not everyone can draw! Ever doodled in your notebook at school being triggered by boredom? Exactly, everyone can draw a stick man or a basic flower.

Can you teach yourself to draw?

The easy answer is Yes, you can teach yourself to draw, and it can be easier than you think. People learn in different ways and some people find the teach yourself approach the easiest way to learn. There are literally hundreds of tutorials about how to draw and you can find a whole series of great examples right here.

How do I make animal drawings realistic?

Animal drawings become more realistic with the key element of shading! Shading brings any portrait to life by creating angles and lighting. Of course this doesn't go to plan without some practise so do your research and find how to add shading and lighting to your portraits. Get practising!

How do I start learning to draw?

Learning to draw is simple as it's a skill it is best learnt with practise... The way I got better at drawing is choosing random things to draw and drawing everyday. Obviously everyday isn't obtainable but just draw when you get 10mins from little 5 minute sketches of objects to even drawing a landscape for around 30mins maybe even attempting a face once an a while. Whether you believe it or not, you already can draw, you just want to gain more control over it. Let yourself have some fun and just draw, as if it were a boring lesson and you had nothing to do. Don't be a perfectionist, and just draw no drawing is a bad drawing! Everyone starts somewhere.

No, all the mixing of colours with pastel pencils is done with layering techniques and each step-by-step tells you which pencil to use and where.

How long will it take me to learn how to use pastel pencils?

It totally depends on how you rise to the challenge but if you have experience in using pastel sticks, coloured pencils, or even graphite pencils there shouldn’t be a steep learning curve at all.  Even without any prior painting or colour work experience, you will be able to work through the step-by-steps efficiently.  The videos will also help you understand how pastel pencils look when they are applied.

Do I need to be able to draw?

If you love to draw and happy to draw your outline that is absolutely perfect but if you are not a practised drawer, you can easily trace the image onto your card or paper with a white pastel pencil. This is not a drawing book, it is all about learning the techniques of painting with pastels.

What is the best way to buy the pastel pencil colours you have used in the book?

There are 3 different manufacturers pencils used to create the portraits within this book, so if you are totally new to pastel pencils, I would recommend buying the Derwent and Cretacolor as single pencils.  I would then buy the largest set of 60 Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils.
