Taming Wildlife Book FAQs

Would a beginner to pastel pencils be able to use this book?

Yes, they would. Anyone who has used pencils, even just graphite pencils would be able to follow these tutorials. The basic principles for using pastels and layering are the same for many other mediums.

What pencils do I need to complete the paintings in the book?

There is a definitive list of all the pencils used in the book provided for you on the page Pencils List for Book.

What is the best way to buy the pastel pencil colours you have used in the book?

There are 3 different manufacturers pencils used to create the portraits within this book, so if you are totally new to pastel pencils, I would recommend buying the Derwent and Cretacolor as single pencils. I would then buy the largest set of 60 Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils.

Why do I need to subscribe to the website to get access to the video tutorials?

The videos were designed to be exclusive to members of the website and for people who purchased the book. In order to access them, you will need to subscribe to the Taming Wildlife website. If you decided to unsubscribe at any time in the future, you will no longer be able to view them.

Where can I find the videos?

You can only access the videos by subscribing to the Taming Wildlife website. When you have subscribed you will have an account and be able to click on the Video Tutorial page to watch the videos.

Can I download the videos?

No, the videos are not available to download. However, you can watch the videos as many times as you want once you have subscribed to the Taming Wildlife website.

How long will it take me to learn how to use pastel pencils?

It totally depends on how you rise to the challenge but if you have experience in using pastel sticks, coloured pencils, or even graphite pencils there shouldn’t be a steep learning curve at all. Even without any prior painting or colour work experience, you will be able to work through the step-by-steps efficiently. The videos will also help you understand how pastel pencils look when they are applied.

Do I need to know how to mix colours?

No, all the mixing of colours with pastel pencils is done with layering techniques and each step-by-step tells you which pencil to use and where.

Do I need to be able to draw?

If you love to draw and happy to draw your outline that is absolutely perfect but if you are not a practised drawer, you can easily trace the image onto your card or paper with a white pastel pencil. This is not a drawing book, it is all about learning the techniques of painting with pastels.

What is the easiest way to transfer the image onto my paper or card?

Some people are quite happy to trace the image onto their surface using traditional tracing methods or using white carbon paper. Other people may prefer to use the grid-method, as this requires a level of skill to master the technique.

What do I need to get started?

If you have somewhere quiet to work to start with, that is really important. All you need is a comfortable chair, a table and a piece of mdf or a hard canvas board to tape your paper or card onto. Obviously, you need some pastel pencils, but it would be ideal to start with a smaller study like the Wolf Paws in Taming Wildlife first, where you only need to buy 9 single Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils. They are all colours you will use again in the book.
